From Paragon Roots to Sandy Favorite: The Story of Carvers Steaks & Seafood

When you dine at **Carvers Steaks & Seafood** in Sandy, Utah, you’re enjoying more than a prime rib or an indulgent seafood platter—you’re experiencing a piece of local history. The restaurant traces its roots to **1996**, when it opened as *Carvers Steaks & Chops* under the umbrella of the Paragon Restaurant Group, a 126‑unit chain that spanned from California to the Midwest. Paragon operated several concepts—Hungry Hunter, Carvers Creek, Cliffhouse and others—and opened two Utah locations in Orem and Sandy. Financial headwinds in the 2000s forced Paragon to shrink, and when the 2008 recession hit, Sandy’s Carvers faced closure. Long‑time employee **Alison Leach** stepped up—she and her brother‑in‑law **Bill DeJong** bought the restaurant, transforming it into the privately owned, family‑operated steakhouse locals know today.

### A commitment to excellence

Carvers isn’t just another steakhouse—it strives to create memorable evenings. As the owners explain, guests aren’t simply customers; they’re welcomed like friends, with a warm and lively atmosphere that encourages laughter and conversation. Staff members see themselves as ambassadors of the brand, knowing that word‑of‑mouth about perfectly cooked filet mignon or stellar service is their most powerful advertisement. According to Alison Leach, Carvers is a **“people company”** driven by a passion to exceed guests’ expectations; she emphasizes that success comes from creating pride and profits that employees share.

### Supporting the community

The owners’ commitment extends beyond the dining room. Through **Carvers Cares**, the restaurant volunteers to cook and distribute food, partners with organizations like *Jackets for Jonah*, and raises money to supply warm clothing to unsheltered neighbors. This community focus reinforces Carvers’ role as a local gathering place that cares about its neighbors.

### Today’s Carvers

Thanks to loyal guests, Carvers has been voted the **best steakhouse in Salt Lake**. Located at **10720 S Holiday Park Drive in Sandy**, the restaurant is minutes from I‑15 and features a recently updated interior with four fireplaces and an atmosphere that suits romantic dates, business dinners or casual meetups. Under Alison Leach’s leadership, Carvers blends its Paragon roots with family‑owned hospitality, serving “the best of land and sea” to patrons from across the Salt Lake Valley.

Warming Hearts in Winter: Carvers Steaks and Seafood's Outreach to Our Community

As the winter chill sets in, our team at Carvers Steaks and Seafood took to the streets, not to serve our signature dishes but to serve warmth and care to our unsheltered neighbors.

This week, with temperatures dropping sharply, our staff bundled up and stepped out with a mission – to bring a little comfort to those braving the cold nights. Armed with more than just our culinary expertise, we distributed essential items to help our community stay warm. Our small but mighty caravan carried sandwiches, gloves, thermals, hand warmers, boots, sleeping bags, and tents.

Each item was handed out with a smile and a message of hope. The gratitude we received in return was overwhelming. Simple sandwiches turned into feasts of kindness, and every pair of gloves shared was like a warm handshake from the heart.

This initiative is just one of the many ways we at Carvers strive to give back to the community that has supported us over the years. We believe that a warm meal can nourish the soul, and a simple act of kindness can ignite hope.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff who volunteered their time for this outreach. Your compassion and commitment are the true essence of what Carvers stands for.

To our patrons and community members, thank you for your ongoing support. It is because of you that we can make initiatives like this possible. Together, let's continue to make a difference, one warm gesture at a time.

Stay warm, stay hopeful.

On 8/31/23 Carvers Supported Hawaiin families affected by the Maui Fires through a direct donation from sales.

Ann Carol and her entire family lost more than just their home in the devastating fire in Maui.

All 5 members of the family had to flee their home holding on to a few bags and their pets. Leaving behind most of their belongings as they escaped to their cousins' house.

They are terrified to revisit the remains but looking to the future to rebuild. Support them by dining at Carvers on Thursday, August 31st. All net sales will be given to their family to help them get started.
